Checking Out Books
How do I get a library card? Miss Titus creates library cards for every student and staff member.
Where is my library card? Library cards are kept in the library. Overdrive cards are given to students in third, fourth, and fifth grade.
When do I borrow books? Stop by the library during open checkout or your library class.
Where do I return books? When the library is open, books may be returned in the bookdrop, located on the front of the circ desk.
Choosing Books
Reading is a joy, a privilege, and the right of every student. As you select the library books you plan to read, please understand that every book is not the best choice for every student. If a book is unappealing or offensive to you in any way, please return it and select another. You, the student, know better than we, the library staff, what reading materials best serve you and your standards and beliefs.
What if the book I want is not on the shelf? Check with library staff. We can tell you if the book is checked out and if so, place a hold on the item. When it's returned, you will be notified.
How do I find books? We are here to help! Please ask library staff for suggestions or other assistance. You may search the OPAC on any library computer.
Caring for Books
Overdue and Lost Books
I think I've lost a book. What should I do? First, come and tell us right away. It's possible that the book has already been returned. Next, clean out your desk and locker. This is where most books are found. This means taking everything out of your desk, all the way to the bottom.
Where else can I look? Your classroom, your teacher's book shelves, under your bed, behind the couch, in your family's car, at grandma's house, at your babysitter's house, in your bookshelves at home, etc.
I can't find it after looking. I'm certain it's lost. If you still can't find the book after doing all the above things, then you will have to pay for it. Come to the library and ask us what the replacement cost will be. You will have to pay for the lost item before you will be allowed to check out anything else from the library. You may pay with cash or checks made out to the GCMS Elementary School.
I FOUND my lost book! Wonderful. If you find the lost book after you have paid for it, bring it in to us and you will receive a full refund.

Caring for Books
- Library books should be carried home in a backpack or bag.
- Students should use clean hands when looking at a book.
- Keep library books away from younger children who may draw, color, or otherwise damage the pages.
- Keep library books away from pets and water.
- Students should be gentle with the pages and covers of books.
- If books are damaged or lost, students should inform Miss Titus immediately. Please do not try to repair damaged books or tape torn pages. Instead, please return damaged items to the library, so our staff can determine how to best make the necessary repairs.
Overdue and Lost Books
- We strive to teach our students to be responsible library patrons.
- Overdue notices are given during library time and notices are also sent weekly to each classroom as an additional reminder.
- We do not charge fines for overdue materials.
- If students have a misplaced library book, they are asked to have adults in the family help them look carefully and return materials as soon as possible.
- Students who lose or damage library materials will be asked to pay the current replacement cost for in-print items. An established minimum replacement fee will be charged for out-of-print items so the book may be replaced with a similar title.
- Students with unpaid charges will not be able to check out additional materials until the charges are paid. If a family is financially burdened, they are asked to communicate with the librarian to work out a plan for payment.
- Refunds will be given when lost books are returned.
